Wy'east Board Meeting
August 27th, 2008
Present: Reverend Susan Maginn, Karl Arruda, Jill DeRosa, Barbara Smith-Thomas, Mark Alter, Elizabeth Suh.
Action Canvass : Susan recommended changing the date to Sunday, September 7th, the date of the yearly water communion. Will be held during the potluck. Committees/Tasks that will be represented include Membership, Chalice Circles, Music, Office Help, Lock Up, Social Hour, Worship, and Religious Education.
Elizabeth will prepare draft of tasks associated with each group. Board members agreed to be available to discuss committees as needed. Will place sign-up sheets at each table where congregants gather to eat.
Susan's Time Allocation: Susan wants to commit to no more than 1 meeting per week. It is noted that this is in addition to her other regularly scheduled Wy'east commitments as well as those that can't be anticipated ahead of time, such as pastoral care. Susan will assess as the church year progresses and may, under special circumstances, be available for more than one meeting per week.
Waverly Lease: At the end of this month our lease is up for renewal. A variety of options were discussed. Barbara will create a revised lease agreement, proposing a lowering of the rent to 850 dollars per month, and without the use of the building for evening meetings .Barbara will e-mail this agreement to the board for review. Barbara will ask David Z. to whom the agreement should be forwarded.
Building Search Update: Mark spoke about the possibility of using a dance studio in the Hollywood District as an adjunct to the Hollywood Senior Center for worship space and church activities. This building is owned by a woman who is willing to entertain the possibility of renting several rooms, at a reasonable price and is pleased to consider UUs as tenants. The location is at the southwest corner of NE 41st and Broadway. The board discussed several scenarios that would include use of both the studio as well as the Hollywood Senior Center.
Other possibilities discussed were the Great Vow Monastery, currently looking for a building to buy in Portland, and several vacant churches in the Sellwood district of SE Portland.
