Annual interdependence Day Picnic at Creston Park

Rather than meeting at the Hollywood Senior Center this Sunday, join us for our annual Interdependence Day gathering that includes interdependent games, singing and a potluck picnic. Festivities begin at 11:00 am in the Picnic Area at Creston Park (SE 43rd & Rhone -- just south of Powell Blvd).

Pride Sunday

Father’s Day Sunday is the traditional day for Portland’s Pride Parade.   Join us for some member reflections on their own experiences participating in Pride Parades and make your own sign to actively affirm our belief in the inherent worth and dignity of all people.  Those who wish to will have time after the service to take public transit to “Stand on the Side of Love” and view the parade. Gilgamesh and Enkidu, heroes from the city and the countryside, have overcome their initial rivalry and faced down some terrible opponents together.  But now comes a challenge that seems—on the surface—to be one that we can only face alone. Gilgamesh: An Old Story With New Pauses (Part One)

The Epic of Gilgamesh was written on clay tablets at least 1500 years before Homer composed the Iliad and the Odyssey.  It's one of the oldest stories in the world, yet its insights into human mortality and human nature remain fresh enough to inspire a sci-fi story set thousands of years from today!  (Cue the theme from Star Trek…).  Service led by Rev. Oregon Tradeswomen: Building economic independence for women since 1989

Date

For 26 years, Oregon Tradeswomen has been supporting women in nontraditional occupations that allow them to earn higher wages and provide financial security for themselves and their families. With an average entering the program wage of $12,600/year, our no cost training and job placement builds confidence and skills that allow women to increase their annual pay many times over. Lisa Palermo, the Development Director, will share details of how this program works and share stories from women in the program who are now doing jobs they never imagined and making wages that give them financial freedom.

Live Forever, Die Tomorrow

While recovering from the death of his beloved son Ibrahim, the Prophet Muhammad gave his followers some advice on how to live. I will share that advice this morning—along with a Zen painting and some wisdom from my Italian relatives.  Service led by Rev. Craig Moro.
