The First Principle

The first Holy Truth of Buddhism is the recognition of the universality of suffering, the realization that all is ill. The Buddha said: “It is difficult to shoot arrows through a narrow key hole. It is still more difficult to understand that ‘all this is ill.’ ” Our own first principle—To affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person—is also the most difficult one to put into practice.
